This image of eight waxeyes feasting at a bird feeder has netted a Christchurch photographer a Fairfax photography award.

Andrew Lukey snapped the image on July 31 at his parents' Halswell farm.

"It was early and my mother had put some butter on the bird feeder and the waxeyes were going crazy for it. The light had just broken above the nearby hills and I thought the scene was worth photographing," he said.

  1. I love this image and was thrilled to see it on the front page this morning. We've had very similar scenes in our back garden, but I don't have the skills to take such a wonderful photograph.

  2. A truly beautiful picture, with those different stages of flight and wing positions and such! Does the photographer know how widely his picture is spread, I wonder?

  3. This is one of the most outstanding pictures of its type that I've ever seen. Thanks for bringing it to our eyes.
